Dominating the city surrounding it, and visible for miles across the fen landscape, Ely Cathedral plays a part in one of my novellas (Saviour: Buried by Beth Kelan), as does the Porta. The photos included are taken from Cherry Hill and The Gallery - also locations that feature in the story.
Ely is one of the smallest cities in England. The cathedral has its origins in AD 672 when St Etheldreda built an abbey church. The present building dates back to 1083 and was granted cathedral status in 1109.
Although obviously not abandoned - the building is definitely beautiful, and at times eerie (and according to some there may be ghosts roaming here and the surrounding streets).
