Many people are happy harmonising a melodic line but often are less happy harmonising starting with a bass line. This music composition lesson begins with a bass line and considers the best way to select chords to fit it. He then demonstrates how to write a melodic top line that fits with the harmony, that acts well alongside the bass line, and also works well as a melody. We consider the shape and direction of the melody along with the balance between conjunct and disjunct movement and the rhythmic character that can be achieved. Finally the middle parts are completed in a way that achieves as much stability as possible.
