One of the most forgotten but brutal events in English History saw a King who had ruled for decades brutally slain and murdered inside one of the world's most infamous prisons, The Tower of London. King Henry VI was incredibly young when he came onto the throne, and his reign is one that is dominated by poor judgement, military failing and also civil war. The Wars of the Roses erupted within Henry's kingdom, and he was deposed as the King twice by Edward IV and was even reinstated briefly. It was during the Wars of the Roses that a scandalous and bloody event would take place.
Edward IV was informed that Henry VI who was taken prisoner inside the Tower of London had died, but there were many different causes of death put forward. Some scholars attribute his death to, 'melancholy,' brought on by the death of his son at the Battle of Tewkesbury. However the truth was much more violent and bloody than that. Tradition states that whilst he was praying one evening inside a chapel within the Wakefield Tower, a assassin and murderer came up behind him. This killer then plunged a dagger or a sword into the former King Henry VI, and murdered him in cold blood before disappearing into the night. Later observations of Henry's remains in the 20th century confirmed that the King died a bloody death, with blood still remaining on his hair over 500 years later.
Who killed Henry VI remains a mystery today, however it's mostly believed that Edward IV was responsible, as he saw having the former King alive as very dangerous to his new reign. He had defeated Henry a number of times in different battles, but it's believed Edward had him murdered.
