Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has handed over three Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH MK III) to the Indian Navy and two to the Indian Coast Guard.
The helicopters were handed over during Aero India 2021 in the presence of the Defence Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh.
HAL & Indian Navy has signed a contract to deliver 16 ALH Mk III, which is an improved version equipped with Shakti-1H engines, new electronic warfare (EW) suite
and warning systems, automatic chaff and flare dispensers, and improved vibration control system.
As per the defense minister, Rajnath Singh, "The remaining helicopters from the contract are under various stages of production, flight tests and
we plan to deliver all the helicopters within the contract delivery schedules despite production slowdown due to COVID restrictions"
The ALH Mk III is fitted with a state-of-the-art glass cockpit and involves integration of 19 new major systems .
THe helicopter will not be operated from Ship but from shore and has been designed based on the requirement of Indian Navy & coast gaurd.
HAL Dhruv is a World class helicopter in 5.5 tonne category. It is an all whether, multi-role, multi-mission state of art helicopter.
HAL ALH comes up with excellent maneuverability, user friendly control, low vibration and noise level, high speed, efficient lift
which makes it superior among the contemporary helicopters. ALH has logged close to 3,000,000 cumulative flight hours and has proven its merit in versatile operations.
As of October 2020, more than 300 HAL Dhruvs have been produced for domestic and export markets As of October 2020
HAL Dhruv has 4 military variants.
HAL Dhruv MK1 which was the first variant had conventional cockpit with mechanical gauges and Turbomeca TM 333-2B2 turboshaft engines.
A total of 56 MK1 have been delivered to the Indian military
HAL Dhruv MK2 is Similar to the Mk1, except for the newer HAL-IAI glass cockpit. A total of 20 have been delivered to the Indian military
HAL Dhruv MK3 has an improved Shakti-1H engines, new electronic warfare (EW) suite and warning systems, automatic chaff and flare dispensers, and improved vibration control system.
The ALH Mk-III with new Shakti-1H engines has improved high altitude performance and can operating at an altitude over 6 km.
It can host 14 fully equipped troops. DGCA has praised its crashworthy design as few accidents have not caused any fatalities.
Last but not the least is HAL MK4 which is also know as Dhruv-WSI(Weapon system Integrated) or HAL Rudra. It is an attack variant designed for the Indian Army.
HAL Rudra has been armed with both anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, and a 20-mm turret-mounted cannon. The Dhruv-WSI is also capable of conducting
combat air support (CAS) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) roles. Recently DRDO has also conducted the test of ANti-Tank guided missiles from HAL Dhruv.
Performance : Talking about its performance
HAL Dhruv can Cruise at a speed of 250 km/h with max speed of 291 km/h for Mk III
It has Range of 630 km and endurance of 3 hours and 42 minutes for Mk III.
It has Service ceiling of 6,100 m (20,000 ft) and g limits of 3.5.
HAL Dhruv is integrated with latest electronics and Avionics such as
RWS-300 radar warning system or LWS-310 laser warning system
MAW-300 missile approach warning system
SAAB IDAS-3 self-protection suite
BOP-L ECM dispenser
It is also fitted with Israeli ELM-2022 maritime radar. It is a Long-range maritime surveillance Radar with range up to 200 nm and capable of Detecting small targets in
adverse sea conditions. It has Automatic tracking of all detected targets.
HAL MK1 & MK2 is powered two Turbomeca TM 333-2B2 turboshaft engine that can genratea a power of 807 kW.
HAL MK3 & MK4 is powered by imporeved two Shakti-1H turboshaft engine that can genratea a power of 1068 kW
After the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed the lives of 166 people and left 300 others injured, Indian Navy realized the need for long range surveillance helicopters.
The induction of ALH Dhruv will augment the Navy's responsibility for coastal security.
