One billion people living today have had a traumatic dental injury (TDI). While the majority of these injuries are minor in nature — such as an individual chipped or fractured tooth — dental trauma can be much more severe, involving root fractures, dislodged teeth or teeth knocked out altogether. Treatment options for these injuries include stabilization splints, root canals, exodontia or in the most extreme cases, full mouth reconstruction.
For optimal treatment outcomes, correct diagnosis of the severity of the injury is essential and must be achieved through a detailed patient history and clinical assessment, as well as a radiographic assessment with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Join Dr. Vijay Parashar, a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and a leading faculty member at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, for a review of traumatic injuries observed within CBCT scans. Dr. Parashar will discuss how 3D imaging is essential for developing a comprehensive treatment plan, according to the type of injury, as well as identifying when a team of specialists is needed.
Other learning objectives will include:
• Recognizing radiographic signs of trauma
• Exploring a variety of fracture types, including dento-alveolar, tooth, root and jaw
• Comparing intraoral, panoramic, CBCT and medical computed tomography (CT) scans for trauma evaluation
• Understanding treatment considerations for tooth/root fractures
• Reviewing International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines for the management of traumatic dental injuries
