Tim Conibear from Waves for Change uses surf therapy as a tool to inspire social change in South Africa and Liberia.
Waves for Change provides a child-friendly mental health service to at-risk young people and young people with different abilities, living in unstable sea side communities.
The programme works in communities affected by violence, poverty and conflict, where mental health services are often stigmatized and under-resourced.
Through access to safe spaces, caring mentors, and a provision of weekly Surf Therapy sessions, Waves for Change gives children skills to cope with stress, regulate behaviour, build healing relationships, and make positive life choices.
Waves for Changes works operates in:
Masiphumelele, South Africa
Monwabisi, South Africa
Lavender Hill, South Africa
Port Elizabeth, South Africa
East London, South Africa
Harper, Liberia
Waves for Change won the Laureus Sport for Good Award in 2017.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation currently supports more than 200 programmes in over 40 countries that use the power of sport to transform lives.
Founded in response to Nelson Mandela’s challenge, issued at the first Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco in 2000, that “sport has the power to change the world”, our vision is to use sport as a powerful and cost-effective tool to help children and young people overcome violence, discrimination and disadvantage in their lives. Over the last 20 years Laureus Sport for Good has raised more than €150m for the Sport for Development sector and, together with our partners, reached and helped change the lives of almost 6m children and young people.
