(11 Sep 2017) Hurricane Irma's two-day grind along Cuba's northern coast left 10 people dead across the country and devastated the heart of its sun-and-surf tourism industry, officials revealed on Monday.
Seven people died in collapses of Cuba's picturesque but dangerously neglected old buildings - a blow to a country that prides itself on preventing deaths in natural disasters.
Two men were killed when the wall of their apartment collapsed on top of them at the height of the storm, according to neighbors.
The apartment is located in central Havana, in an old building crammed with small apartments and poor infrastructure.
Neighbors said the men were buried under rubble and their bodies recovered by rescue crews using heavy equipment.
The neighborhood of central Havana, which borders the seaside boulevard of the Malecon and the Old City, is often the hardest hit when storms send seawater into low-lying areas of Havana.
Residents spent Monday cleaning streets and putting their household goods outside to dry, as crews in excavators and dump trucks worked to clear the Malecon of sand and debris.
Electricity and running water are spotty around the battered capital, with much of the city remaining in the dark as government agencies rush to re-establish services.
At least 24 people died in other parts of the Caribbean as the hurricane blew through.
