Kenyan police were challenged for the third time this month after clashes erupted between the security personnel and protestors who took the streets of the east African nation to speak against proposed tax hikes championed by President William Ruto’s government.
Demonstrations were sparked online by Kenyan youth who used the hashtag #rejectfinancebill. However, the online movement morphed into people taking to the streets to express their dissatisfaction in Ruto’s administration, with some calling for the president’s resignation.
Some protestors say Ruto should step down from presidency because he has failed at living up to his campaign promises which were centered around uplifting the nation’s youth and the unemployed community.
Kenyan authorities say the tax hikes aim to lighten the nation’s debt costs which consume over a third of its revenue. They also offered concessions that protestors have rejected as inadequate.
