You may well have heard of people talking about their hindwaters breaking but not their forewaters? Or perhaps you were adamant your waters had broken but when you're examined you're told the membranes in front of the baby's head can still be felt intact?

A hole can appear in any part of the amniotic sac, which sits within the womb. How much fluid you lose depends on where the baby is stationed within the pelvis. In my demo video, the baby is literally being born so please ignore that 😆
The baby's head, when engaged fills up the pelvis and some water may collect in front of it. When you go into labour, the membranes holding the waters in place may start to bulge through the cervix as it starts to dilate. This pressure may or may not cause them to release.

With hindwater leaks, these too can happen before or during labour. Often they may appear to be more of a trickle as the baby's head is plugging the cervix. You may even think you've pee'd yourself!

Both types of rupture = waters breaking.
If you are preterm and you think your waters may have broken, it's important to call your provider straight away.
If the baby is not engaged, the head is not acting as a plug so you may notice much more fluid loss.

I must also add that only around 10% of people will experience waters breaking before labour starts. Most of the time you are already having contractions by the time they release.
