Star Micronics developed the world's smallest screw with a diameter of 0.3mm.

Currently the smallest is considered to have the diameter of 0,4mm. Utilizing their own cutting
technologies, Star Micronics have been making extremely small screws for high-end watches.

In the challenge to create the smallest screw, Star Micronics uses the mass production method of thread heading or cold head.

In the process, they use special molds and tools. When casting the screw head during the cold head shaping process- the mold has to be positioned and finely adjusted at the spin finishing stage.

This fine adjusting are both necessary during the carving of screw thread rolling process and at pitch work for setting the screw accurately into the die.

The 0.3mm screw meets the Japanese Industrial Standards (or JIS) but at present there are no specific applications which require it.

However it has potential in the ever increasing downsize of precision equipments or semiconductor related materials. Star Micronics is focussing on mass production and expects new and currently unforseen markets to open up soon.
