Kaidan "comes out" to Shepard by saying he wants "someone handsome". This line is only available if you created a new male Shepard for Mass Effect 3.

In case you imported your male Shepard from Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 1 before that, Kaidan will recall that you've known each other for a very long time and he hasn't been with anyone during that time.
