From my Turtledove Award-winning AlternateHistory.com epic "What Madness Is This?" Redux: The Union Forever. After being all but destroyed in a far more brutal War of 1812 than in our history, the downtrodden folk of the Republican Union of America turns to the mad Prophet Burr and his teachings of American Fundamentalist Christianity. Burr promises them that Manifest Destiny shall heal their wounds and sorrow. They seek hope and light, but they will find only madness and tyranny that will stretch well into the 20th century, as the cult becomes the state church of the Union.
