Jess Vojtek is from Noble Park North in Melbourne Victoria, and currently works as an advanced medic.
She joined APC to study Certificate IV in Health Care but soon realised how much she loved health care and “levelled up” into the Diploma of Paramedical Science (now called the Diploma of Emergency Health Care).
“I chose APC they offered an online service and, um, it allowed me to be more flexible with my timeframe working full time […] and I haven't looked back since.”
As an event medic for Colbrow Medical - a job she secured by proving herself during her work placement she did with the company as part of her Diploma – Jess has found a role she absolutely loves and feels confident in.
“We normally run as a solar responder, from anywhere between a school sport, festivals, concerts, fashion shows and we also do professional sports, such as AFL Women, and W-League soccer.
You get to watch the sports. I mean, it's great!”
Jess rates her study experience with APC very highly, particularly when it came to support. If was well beyond her expectations for an online course program.
“Even though a lot of it is online, you still have that support network around you. You can call [APC] business hours and you can email them, and they will contact you back and offer the support you need.”
Jess also bravely shared that she had “a lot of personal issues throughout my study time”, which is when she was contacted by our Mental Health First Aid officer for a supportive chat.
“I can honestly say it was the best conversation I ever had. It was only maybe half an hour chat and she just listened to what I had to say, and she got me on track.”
Jess faced another challenge in her career goal to become an emergency service professional. She felt she didn’t get the grades at school to pursue a career in emergency health care, but found her pathway to the dream job that she loves, via the APC Diploma program. Jess’ grades didn’t matter in the end, her determination and belief were the only necessary ingredients.
In her words, “I didn't end up with the best ATAR. My initial fears were that I wasn't smart enough to be working in this field, that I didn't have the capabilities. APC helped me to realize that I did, […] studying the diploma, I was able to do it at my own pace. I had all the resources available and, towards the end I thought […] I could do it. And I'm now working in the field, and I absolutely love what I do.”
It's a great career to have, and I wouldn't change it for anything. I can honestly say I would never change what I'm doing now.”
“My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.”
