Although it is popularly assumed that changes in body weight reflect the choices an individual makes about what food to eat, how much to eat and how much to exercise, the long-term balance between energy intake and energy output is mainly determined by unconscious physiological systems.
This lecture, by Prof Gareth Leng (University of Edinburgh) will address some of the myths and misconceptions about obesity, and will seek to explain why losing weight is so difficult and why we still have no effective drug treatments for obesity.
