In Apatani tribe, in Arunachal Pradesh, India. People used to believe that wearing nose plugs, and facial tattoos, would protect their women from being kidnapped.
In the past, the Apatani women were considered, the most beautiful among the other tribes, which caused attack and abduction from the enemies. One Apatani leaders, suggested that their women should wear nose plugs, and facial tattoos to make them unattractive to the eyes of the raiders. Since then, the Apatani women plugged their nose and tattooed their face for protection.
Once an Apatani woman had menarche, the circular nose plugs, called "yaping hurlo"would be placed into the sides of her nose. And a linear tattoo drawn on her face. But today, younger Apatani women, no longer practice the tradition, since it was banned by the Government during the 1970s.
