The United States Northeast awoke on Monday under a blanket of snow as a powerful winter storm pummeled a vast swath stretching from Pennsylvania through New England, causing widespread disruption in New York City and other major urban centers in the region.
The powerful "Nor'easter" is forecast to bring one to two feet of snow across the region through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, and snowfall rates could reach two to four inches per hour during the storm's peak.
Cars and trucks struggled to navigate snow-covered streets in New York, while rock bottom temperatures froze over a portion of Lake Michigan in Chicago. Meanwhile, a Pennsylvania man and his son "hit the slopes" in their own neighborhood, skiing down the street.
Across the region, people have been warned to stay at home except in emergencies. COVID-19 vaccination sites are also closed in some areas including Rhode Island, New Jersey and Connecticut.
