Ziro valley in India’s eastern-most state Arunachal Pradesh is home to the Apatani Tribe which is known for its distinct cultural practices. About 100 kms away from the state capital Itanagar, Apatani Tribe’s elderly women can be seen wearing huge nose plugs and have face tattoos. While the tradition of nose plugs is no more practised by the young tribals, elderly women still wear them, generating curiosity about what started this body modification practice in the first place.
