Thousands of Turks, Syrians, Lebanese, Kurds, Greeks, Armenians and Jews immigrated to the United States to look for better economic opportunities during the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. They established mosques, churches, bakeries, restaurants, coffee houses and even peddlers in the heart of New York City.
