In 1968, amidst the high tensions of the cold war, a soviet submarine went missing 1,600 miles off the coast of Hawaii. On the ship was a R-21 Nuclear Missile, alongside cryptological documents and equipment. Both items that could help advance the USA’s political position were they to find them. Therefore the CIA searched for, and consequently found the vessel, leading to the alleged beginning of the, covert at the time, project AZORIAN. After 6 years and 800 MIllion Dollars, the CIA claims on their official website, that a ship with a grabbing device on its underside to covertly lift the submarine off the seafloor commenced the attempt at stealing the vessel. During the operation however, the ship's crew felt an earthquake-like tremor; either the grabbing hook malfunctioned or the submarine came apart in it’s grips, but either way, the craft wasn’t able to be lifted onto the ship and the project was abandoned.
