STORYLINE:
American warplanes unleashed dozens of bombs on Friday on Taliban positions along the frontline north of the capital, Kabul.
Several explosions were heard on the outskirts of Kabul, and huge plumes of smoke rose along the front line about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the city.
In Kabul itself, life was carrying on much as normal on Friday, the Muslim holy day.
Clerics offered prayers for a quick end to the month-old U.S.-led air campaign, saying it should end before Ramadan begins next week.
Despite the relative normality of Kabul, there have been some changes brought about by the bombing.
Schools have been finishing for their long winter break earlier this year because of the air campaign.
One, the Qalai Fatullah Khan School, closed earlier this week, a month early.
Its deputy administrator, Abdul Rahim Haseeb, said he hadn't been paid in five months, another sign of the desperate state which Afghanistan has found itself in.
He said he continued to come to the school for the sake of the next generation of Afghans.
The United States has said that it is unlikely to call a cease fire during Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, when devout Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.
However, Muslim countries have expressed a desire that the air campaign wind up before Ramadan, which is expected to begin on November 17.
Opposition commanders have said an offensive near Kabul is not imminent, with the focus of their planning on the battle for the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.
