I had the chance to see Willemin-Macodel CNC machines this year at IMTS 2022. This was like seeing a unicorn in the forest for me. For those unfamiliar with these swiss made mill-turn machines they are extremely high precision on both the mechanical side as well as the thermal side. Many of the machine offerings from Willemin are linear driven with complete thermal comp and cooling for repeatable accurate results. The spindles are engineered for incredibly high speeds and small intricate parts.
Willemin caters to the jewelry, watchmaking, surgical, and other high end markets where small perfect parts with tight tolerances are often made from raw bar stock. The advantage to this platform over a swiss style lathe is a focus primarily on milling applications. At around a half a million dollar price tag they are some of the smallest and incredible machines I saw at the show.
You'll notice as you watch these special machines work that the milling spindles are doing a lot of the heavy lifting. This doesn't negate their turning prowess its simply a purpose built solution to mill turn and Willemin offers many configurations perfect for the problem being solved.
