A client with ataxic "shuffling" gait was found to have decreased weight bearing in one leg. To fix this we used three exercises: Practicing weight shift on two scales to have the client become aware of their unequal weight bearing, Side stepping on a treadmill to both the right and left sides to promote weight shift, when you walk sideways you have to fully shift your body weight (using an overhead harness for safety) and last is Practicing a full step while holding a weighted cable from a functional trainer. Because the client has to shift to one side to keep the cable from pulling them over, it forces them to shift their weight.
