• Earlier I brought a video of still photographs of the birds of sattal with a brief note on how to reach there and the best season for birding in sattal Uttarakhand, India
• This video is about a kingfisher. The kingfisher in in reference is a small, beautifully coloured bird and endemic to Indian sub continent and southeast Asia.
• When monsoon starts the tourism in general comes to a halt. But this particular kingfisher activates bird tourism, several photographers conglomerate in the western ghats for a glimpse of this one.
• This is called Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher and shortly called ODKF.
• It is also called Black backed kingfisher or Three toed kingfisher, and Jewel of Konkan.
• It is found in Lowland forests in Indian Sub-continent and south-east Asia, i.e., in India, SriLanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Combodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and philippines.
• In India it is found in Eastern and North Eastern India, also along western Ghats and Western Tamilnadu and Andaman and Nicobar islands.
• In India there are few places which have come up with facilities for ecotourism of ODKF. They are Chiplun and Abloli in Ratnagiri District, In Maharashtra.
• The photographs were clicked in Shiravali village, Chiplun, Maharashtra. All these photographs were clicked from a hide in Nandu Tambe’s farm.
• It is a very small kingfisher measuring between 13 to 14 cms.
• A dark spot on the forehead, The chin and throat are white. Coral red bill, blue and white patches on the side of the neck. Orange yellow undeparts, and three toed legs. The male kingfisher is bit smaller than the female. Female has rufous head whereas male has purple head. Female has more black than blue upper parts whereas male has bright blue upper parts.

• They are found in the Shady places in jungle streams in moist deciduous forests and Evergreen forests.
• The food mainly consists of geckos, skinks, crabs, snails, frogs, crickets, and dragonflies.
• It starts breeding on the onset of monsoon right from mid July till September.It dugs a tunnel into the vertical wall of the streams. They lay about 4 to 5 eggs and hatching in 17 days . Both male and female incubate the eggs.
• In about 20 days chicks are ready for fledging.
