Salt-using water softeners are very different from salt-free "softeners". Technically, salt-free water softeners shouldn't be called a "softener" because they do not remove any water hardness; instead, most of these systems use technology called TAC (templated assisted crystalization) which temporary turn calcium and magnesium (which cause hard water) into small crystals that prevent sticking to plumbing, fixtures and appliances. One problem is that this process is designed to be temporary, so water that sits for a prolonged period of time will still continue to leave water stains and calcium buildup. Another problem is that its hard to test the salt-free water softener because the hardness minerals were not removed from the water, just temporarily modified.
In places similar to El Paso where water hardness is above average, these salt-free water softeners have not worked well and, in some cases, purchasers of this equipment have had issues with bad smelling water and persistent calcium buildup.
