Adaptation of Canon in Für Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) played on a 30-note paper strip music box.
Before the age of magnetic storage punched cards were the standard way of storing and retrieving digital information for computers, payroll systems, CNC systems, census counts, etc. Jaquard looms were capable of being programmed using punched cards for creating intricate patterns already in the mid 18th Century.
The paper strip being fed into the music box controls which notes are being played and illustrate another use of punched paper that was popular earlier: for programming music automatons.
