Rudolf Hess was a prominent Nazi official, serving as Adolf Hitler's Deputy Führer from 1933 to 1941.
In May 1941, he undertook a solo mission, flying from Germany to Scotland to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom. Hess believed he could broker a peace deal that would allow Germany to focus on its Eastern Front against the Soviet Union.
On May 10, 1941, Hess piloted a Messerschmitt Bf 110 and parachuted into Scotland, near Glasgow, hoping to meet the Duke of Hamilton. Instead, he was captured by local authorities and subsequently arrested. The British government detained Hess as a prisoner of war.
His mission was dismissed by Hitler, who declared him insane.
