Greetings Foreign Service applicants. Yes, registration for the October Foreign Service Exam opens 8/29. The one hurdle -- and it's a big one -- is the State Department insists that you select your career track when you register.
Career Tracks: Consular, Economic, Management, Political, and Public Diplomacy.
Deciding on a track (aka cone) is a huge and very personal choice because you will be tied to your career track throughout your 20+ year career. There are out-of-cone assignments and when you reach the senior ranks you'll fill "multifunctional" positions, but for most of your career you'll be working in your career track.
I know a lot about that: I served in the Foreign Service for 24 years, rising from an entry level consular officer to Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) in the Africa Bureau. Yes, I was a Consular Cone officer.
The State Department wants everyone to choose their career track when they register. Fortunately, they provide some excellent resources and I'll show you where to find them along with my advice.
It all starts on State's recruiting website -- Careers.State.Gov
Come join me in exploring what career track suits you the best.
