About Le Socrate
Puerto Portals in undoubtedly one of the most exclusive harbours in the Southwest of Mallorca. Slick mega yachts roost on the Mediterranean Sea's crystal turquoise waters in the marina and their glittering international clientele alights on the boardwalk for dinner, a crowd that spares no expense and has an epicurean tastes. Think J.Lo's Ben Affleck dating days -- you have the idea.
The restaurants in the Puerto Portals marina are extravagant -- most tend toward showmanship and rare ingredients. When we heard about Le Socrate, a Lebanese-Asian fusion restaurant had opened in Puerto Portals, we were not surprised, but we were curious. Although separately the cuisines are some of our favourite flavours, hummus and sashimi feel incompatible taste profiles.
A friendly maitrê d met us with a glass of delicious crisp rosé cava and we were seated on the terrace in the inner courtyard of the marina where the illuminated palm trees and white cloth tables deliver modern Mediterranean ambience, but without the sea views, you could be anywhere.
Le Socrate offers the two distinct cuisines as separate a la carte Asian and Lebanese menus, so we made selections from each. For our Asian starter we had salmon tempura sushi with avocado and asparagus which was a generous two bite roll and a mezze (Lebanese entrée) of a tahini-rich eggplant caviar dip, moutabal. The moutabal was delicious, and if served with a homemade pita, it would have been divine.
For our main courses we decided on the Fried Sea Bream served over a sweet potato purée with wok fried vegetables. The fish skin was crisp and perfectly cooked, albeit lacking any real Asian flavours. Chiche Taouk, a traditional lemon marinated and grilled chicken breast skewer was the meal's highlight; served with onion mejadra-style rice and tart hummus, it was tender and succulent.
For dessert, a strawberry mango flan was light and a perfect palate refresher for a selection of baklava and basbousa and a bird's nest of kunafa flown in from the Middle East. A Turkish delight was all that was missing.
The Asian menu at Le Socrate is formidable, but restaurant Le Socrate's Lebanese menu is what you make the trek for, offering the authenticity in flavour that Puerto Portals can benefit from. Bravo!
