The systematic examination of the ear involves: Inspection: Inspect the preauricular area for any preauricular sinus, scar or lymph node, Pinna for any developmetal deformities and postauricular area for any postauricular scar, sinus, fistula or lymphnode. Next pull the pinna outward and backward to inspect the external auditory canal for for any furuncle, discharge debri and then examine the ear drum for any retraction or perforation and if there is discharge through the perforation. Next palpate the tragus, cymba conchae and lastly the mastoid process.
