What Happened to the German General who surrendered to the Soviets? #shortsfeed #shorts #ytshorts
After German General Friedrich Paulus and his men surrendered at Stalingrad in February 1943, Paulus and many of his soldiers were captured by the Soviets. Paulus became the highest-ranking German officer captured during WWII. Initially, he was treated rather well by the Soviets, but he was subjected to interrogation and propaganda efforts to urge him to work for the Soviet Union. However, Paulus refused to work with the Soviets and remained loyal to Germany. He was later transferred to a special camp for high-ranking German officers in Moscow. Despite Soviet attempts to use him for propaganda, Paulus maintained his German allegiance. Following the war, Paulus was repatriated to Germany in 1953 and settled in East Germany. The West German administration regarded him with mistrust after his surrender at Stalingrad and subsequent incarceration in the Soviet Union. Paulus died in 1957 in Dresden, East Germany, where he had lived peacefully and mostly out of the spotlight.
