Ep. 43 SOLACE FOR THE SOUL SMALTI MOSAIC & progress on the baby chick!
I start this week by working on the smalti and filati garden. Using gray thinset, I place the slivers and shards radiating out from the central element of the home.
BONUS: I give my mosaic birdbath a very satisfying rinse and fill it up for the birds!
Back to my mosaic garden, I build up the background with swaths of green, with bits of pink and yellow.
DOUBLE BONUS: I rinse off some stepping stones after winter! And a garden ball. And a beetle rock.
Now that everything is rinsed off, I focus on more of the mosaic garden refuge I am building in my studio. The green is deeper further from the house. I cut some darker green with hammer and hardie and finish with the upper left corner!
TIP: Instead of wasting leftover thinset, I add it to a stepping stone mold that I've been filling for a while.
I sort the smalti and put it back in place. Glass rods and filati are put back. Shards are bagged up and saved to be used when making my own filati.
Next, I show how I like to transfer Weldbond from a big jug into Wilton brand squeezable containers. They are easy to clean out and I love them!
When cutting long thin strips of stained glass, running pliers are not going to do the job! That is when I use my grozing pliers to cut the glass.
Then the spring green glass is filled in under and around my mosaic chick. I add some fun frit balls to the mix because they are luscious and I cannot resist!
That's it! See you next time.
