This instructional video is aimed at Healthcare Professionals and describes the technique for injecting the knee joint using the anterolateral and anteromedial approaches (eyes of the knee).
Recommended dosage is 40-80mg of Kenalog or Depo-Medrone, and 5-10 mls 1% Lidocaine or 0.25% Bupivacaine.
The technique can also be used for injecting a hyaluronic acid product or PRP.
This technique can be performed in sitting with the knee hanging loosely at 90 degrees but the preferred position is supine for patient comfort and relaxation with knee flexed to 90 degrees.
I use a 10 ml leur lock syringe with a 2 inch (50mm) 21G green needle. In large knees a 70mm needle may be required. A 40mm standard length needle may not be long enough to reach an intra-articular depth in many knees.
Always perform a safety aspiration. The injection should flow freely.
Always use an aseptic non-touch technique.
