-- PRESENTATION: SHOJITSUKEN RIKATA ICHI RYU KENJUTSU --
The Shojitsu Kenri Kata Ichi Ryū Kenjutsu was founded during the early Tokugawa period (late 17th century) by Imaeda Sachū Ryōdai. His son Imaeda Sanaka Fujiwara Ryōtai, born in 1647, is also mentioned as the founder of this art. From his father he learned the Imaeda-ryū Kenjutsu, and traveled with his uncle to Edo (former Tokyo and seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate), accomplishing his studies of the sword under his uncle's guidance. Imaeda also learned Yagyū-ryū, Kittō-ryū, Kashiwara-ryū and founded a Būjutsu Dojo in Edo.
Its teachings mainly consist of Battōjutsu with a curriculum including partner work wearing the traditional Yoroi armor, sword drawing techniques and techniques with the Jō.
The characteristics of his school are deeply rooted in the family's Imaeda-ryū Kenjutsu, especially the techniques of drawing the sword. A wooden swords with scabbard is used for practice; it is said that even with a wooden sword, if studied to perfection, a master of this school could acquire enough strength to cut the branches of a tree.
The maneuver to shake off the blood of the sword and wipe it clean with two fingers before returning it to its scabbard, as well as the way of kneeling are also special to this art.
