STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters gathered in front of the Rabea el-Adaweya mosque in Cairo on Thursday to show their support for Mohammed Morsi, a day after he was ousted as president by the Egyptian military.
The supporters held a sit-in protest calling for the restoration of Morsi as the country's legitimate president.
"I would like to tell General Sissi that Morsi is your president and the legitimate president of this country, and all the countries of the world acknowledge him as president. We are not leaving unless the presidency is restored" said Morsi supporter Sherif Al Sharawy.
Morsi was Egypt's first democratically elected president, and the second leader to be overthrown by the army after Hosni Mubarak's removal during the 2011 revolution.
"What happened is a setback to the legitimacy and the democracy that the country achieved." said another supporter, Taher Ahmed.
The military moved to remove Morsi from office after millions of Egyptians took to the streets to demand his resignation.
The chief justice of Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court was sworn in on Thursday as the nation's interim president, taking over hours after the military ousted Morsi.
Adly Mansour took the oath of office at the Nile-side Constitutional Court in a ceremony broadcast live on state television.
According to military decree, Mansour will serve as Egypt's interim leader until a new president is elected.
A date for that vote has yet to be set.
Morsi is under house arrest at an undisclosed location.
