Piece is also known as 'Yuna's Determination' and 'Calm Lands.'
As a child, I always struggled trying to get through FFX, yet I was still somehow engrossed in its story - despite not being able to understand a thing. I never finished it back then, but somehow I think that was a blessing in disguise. Not too long ago, I played through FFX (Remastered) from start to finish... It did not disappoint!! It's one of those games I had to give a standing ovation towards (despite being the only one in the room). Anyway, the story is magical. The game itself contains one of my favourite moments in a Final Fantasy game ever - Yuna's Decision.
Yuna's Decision focuses on her own moral dilemma. It challenges ideas of friendship vs serving a greater purpose. I've shown a few clips of the actual moment I'm referring to itself in which Yuna reminisces of her friends. It's this very bond with her friends that really impacts the direction of the story.
On to the music! I was inspired by both the original and remastered versions of this theme; they both present the same message and feel in very unique ways: the original, with its warm bells and incredibly soft instrumentation; the remastered version, with its lush strings and mellow piano sound. I tried to find a sort of middle way, incorporating strings, winds, a harp, piano, choir, celeste and a little bit of brass.
At 3:30, the arrangement takes a significant, but not completely unrelated, detour. The celeste plays the melody of Suteki Da Ne accompanied by the Suteki Da Ne scene from the game. I was originally tempted to completely fuse the two pieces but I think I would rather leave Suteki Da Ne for another day and a new set of instruments - and hopefully a singer too! For anyone that has not played the game, Suteki Da Ne is an extremely significant piece that recurs in many different forms throughout the game. It's typically associated with Tidus and Yuna and their emotional connection.
As always, thanks for watching.
Take care!
