Spectacular and demanding tour from Planica via Kotovo Sedlo and northwest ridge on top of Jalovec.

The tour via northwest ridge to the summit of jalovec is breathtaking and very spectacular. Mainly free climbing UIAA 1-2 difficulty. At ferrata sections with ropes, there is difficulty A/B max. B.

The tour is very long and very demanding. (1671 vertical meters ascent and 10km tour length)

Besides excellent stamina and trained legs, for climbing the northwest ridge and especially descending this trail, full mental strength is required. This trail requires full attention permamentely. Because due to the many unsecured passages, especially at very exposed areas with danger of falling, this trail is demanding for the psyche.

I would recommend crossing Jalovec and descending the easier trail in the south (Slovenska Planinska Pot) via the mountain hut „Zavetišče Pod Špičkom" to Vršič or Trenta and get yourself picked up there. An ascent or decent via „Zavetišče Pod Špičkom" is easier, it‘s danger must not be underrestimated either. Full concentration and attention is also required at the climbing sections. Overall 1300 vertical meters and also 10km length. I assume decending to Vršič takes a lot longer than descending to Planica.

To the top of Jalovec it took us 6 hours including little breaks and descending to Vršič took us 6 hours as well.

Tips:
Most importantly: Check the weatherforecast. Don't climb the mountain, if the weather is unstable!
Starting the tour early (we started between 5 and 6am
Bring along a lot to drink (4-5 Liters)
At Kotovo Sedlo you can sleep in the biwak

helmet, climbing gloves, via ferrata set (for feeling more secure at the exposed areas)

Spektakuläre und anspruchsvolle Tour von Planica über den Kotsattel (Kotovo Sedlo) und dem Nordwestgrat auf den Jalovec.

Die Tour über den Nordwestgrat auf den Jalovec ist atemberaubend und sehr spektakulär. Meist freies Klettern im 1.-2. Schwierigkeitsgrat. An mit Seilen und Stiften gesicherten Stellen Schwierigkeit A/B max. B.

Die Tour ist sehr lang und sehr anspruchsvoll. (1.671 Höhenmeter im Anstieg und 10km Tourlänge)

Neben ausgezeichneter Kondition und trainierter Beine, benötigt man für die Nordwestgratbesteigung und v.a. Abstieg an diesen, auch vollste mentale Stärke. Der Weg verlangt durchgehend volle Konzentration. Denn aufgrund der vielen ungesicherten Passagen v.a. an sehr ausgesetzten Stellen mit Absturzgefahr, ist dieser Weg v.a. für die Psyche anspruchsvoll.

Es empfiehlt sich eine Jalovec Überschreitung zu machen und den Abstiegsweg über den einfacheren Weg im Süden (Slovenska Planinska Pot) über die Schutzhütte „Zavetišče Pod Špičkom“ nach Vršič oder Trenta zu nehmen und sich von dort abholen zu lassen. Ein Abstieg bzw. Aufstieg über „Zavetišče Pod Špičkom“ ist einfacher, seine Gefährlichkeit darf aber auch hier auf keinen Fall unterschätzt werden. Auch an den Kletterstellen die sich hier befinden, ist volle Konzentration erforderlich. Insgesamt ca. 1300hm im Auf/Abstieg und ebenfalls ca. 10km. Ich nehme dennoch an, dass der Abstieg nach Vršič viel länger dauert als der Abstieg nach Planica.

Für den Aufstieg benötigten wir ca. 6h inkl. kurzen Pausen. Für den Abstieg nach Vršič benötigten wir nochmals ca. 6h.

Tipps:
Ganz wichtig: Unbedingt Wetterbericht checken. Sollte das Wetter unbeständig sein, auf keinem Fall auf den Berg gehen!
Früher Start am Morgen. (Wir sind zwischen 5 und 6 Uhr gestartet)
Viel zu trinken mitnehmen. (4-5 Liter)
Am Kotsattel kann man im Biwak übernachten.

Ausrüstung:
Helm, Kletterhandschuhe, eventuell Klettersteigset (für das Gefühl von Sicherheit an den mit Seilen gesicherten Stellen)
