The IEC is expected to announce the results of Wednesday's by-elections later today.
The elections were held in seven provinces to replace councillors who had either died or had been removed from office by their parties. Voting was suspended in ward 20 in Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape after the former councillor of the ward, Ntombizondwa Gamnca obtained a court interdict against her expulsion from the council. The IEC's Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Mashego Sheburi said the elections went smoothly and that the count started last night as planned.
