🎸🔥❤️ The CAGED system is the key to unlocking the neck, and not just for the chords. This is often the biggest misconception in guitar learning, that the CAGED system is just about chord shapes. Yes, it is based on that idea, but when learnt properly it gives you the tools to be able to improvise both in chords and lead over any set of chord changes.
It is now time to tackle all the shapes at the same time! This simply means that we will be choosing one part of the fretboard and working in that same position to bring in all the minor CAGED shapes. This is where we really start to dive into the GOLD of using the CAGED chord systemand we’ll start to see the massive benefits of doing so.

The Minor CAGED System [21 of 28] Unlocking The Fretboard
The first part of our mission is to lay out the chords in one part of the neck. You can, in theory, choose absolutely anywhere for this, and eventually you’ll be able to do it all over the neck, but for now we will choose one position. That position will be based around the 5th fret. We are using the same chord progression, as shown here: Am, Em, Bm, F#m, C#m, F#m, G#m.
As we walk through each of the course, and each CAGED shape, we break things down into 4 parts:
1. We take the CAGED chord shape and arpeggio of that chord. We work on how you can find the chord easily, anywhere on the fretboard, and make sure that you have the shapes together.
2. We then add the next two layers, the pentatonic scale and the diatonic scale. This ensures that we can build a 5 note and 7 note scale from our CAGED position, allowing a lot more freedom when it comes to our soloing and improvisation.
3. We then bring in our Guitar Gym backing track, which is custom designed to really make you work! It rolls through 7 keys, using the circle of fifths, to put your skills to the test. In this part, we methodically play the chord, arpeggio, pentatonic and diatonic scale over the top of each key change to embed the positions into your head.
4. Finally, before the next unit we will take the same track, but this time get creative. I will guide you through the process of taking these concepts, and turning them into an improvised solo, explaining exactly how you change the key using the CAGED system.
We repeat this process for each of the CAGED shapes, before unit 6 where we put all of the CAGED shapes in one position of the neck, and learn to improvise in one area. Then, finally, in UNIT 7, we bring the world of major and minor together over a brand new jam track which you'll be using for months afterwards, honing your skills.
Above all, keep learning and keep having fun! 😀🎸🙃
