Ayres Associates produced this animation to give the City of Eau Claire and the public a detailed, visual representation of the proposed improvements for the causeway that provides access to the City’s Carson Park. Ayres provided a conceptual design for the Grand Avenue bridge over Half Moon Lake, which will then go to final design if approved. While the current causeway is a narrow bottleneck where vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians, and fishermen come into close contact, the proposed improvements would double the width of the causeway to provide bike lanes, wide sidewalks, places to take in the scenery, and even improved fish habitat and better navigation under the bridge.
The project requires a replacement beyond the ordinary. The bridge is one of two entrances to Carson Park, which is considered Eau Claire's "Crown Jewel" due to its picturesque location and variety of sports and recreation activities that are available year-round. Public involvement during the design is important because of the high profile nature of the project, and this animation is being used to communicate the details of the project.
The proposed project involves replacement of the existing concrete arch bridge with a new structure, along with about 600 feet of approaches. The causeway will be widened to improve multi-modal accommodations for all park users. Other special considerations include fishing accommodations, user friendly and context appropriate landscaping, lighting, environmental impacts, and minimizing disruption to the park during construction.
