The 68th Sydney Film Festival: 03-14 November 2021
Directed by Danny Cohen
The antithesis of a rock biography, a raw, intimate picture of enigmatic singer-songwriter-guitarist Courtney Barnett, directed by music video collaborator Danny Cohen, with a score by Barnett and Stella Mozgawa.
Melburnian Courtney Barnett scored a Best New Artist Grammy nomination for her debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. In 2018, just turned 30, she was about to release her second album and tour the world. Long-time collaborator and one-man crew, Danny Cohen spent three years filming Barnett and asked the notoriously guarded musician to keep an audio diary. The combination of Cohen’s 16mm footage and Barnett’s dictaphone musings reveal an artist struggling with confidence and self-perception, alongside pressures of fame, performing and touring. The unique filming process mirrors Barnett’s search for artistic purpose and her place in the world. Edited by Ben Hall and produced by Philippa Campey (Brazen Hussies) and Samantha Dinning (No Time for Quiet).
