On a grim October day in 1961, the skies echoed with the unique roar of a single Tupolev Tu-95, soaring with a weight more than the bomb it carried, its belly harboring mankind's most terrifying creation: the Tsar Bomba.
Cameras inside the aircraft captured the palpable tension while those outside awaited the impending detonation. Outside, the world held its breath. The countdown dwindled, awaiting the release of the most devastating thermonuclear device ever conceived.
In the uncertain atmosphere of the early 1960s, the Soviet Union, fueled by a mix of fear and ambition, pushed the boundaries of nuclear testing. Specially modified to give its crew a chance, the Tu-95 was painted in ghostly anti-flash white. It was as much a test for the bomb as it was for the bomber, which, decades later, remains as current as ever as part of Russia’s ambitions.
