🔴 EN The Corcoaia (or Corcoaiei) Gorges are located in the Cerna Valley, in the Mehedinți Mountains, 44 km north of the Băile Herculane resort.
Access is on the Băile Herculane – Uricani road (DN 66A). This road has existed for 100 years as a forest road and, although it is listed on the maps as a national road, between Cerna Sat and Câmpușel, it has remained a forest...until today.
The bottom of the keys is excavated in 4-6m marmites that form an uninterrupted string of rare beauty. Initially, a tunnel through which the water passed, after the collapse of the ceiling became an impressive canyon, especially because of the way the water eroded the rock, forming an overhang on the left side that is also the access point to the gorge.
The Corcoaia gorges are similar in appearance and formation to the Bănita gorges, but the latter is more...photogenic :)
The area is called Corcoaia after the name of a character from Romanian mythology who was either an old woman who advises Hercules or, in another version, the very dragon (hydra) that he fought with. Another consequence of the legend of Hercules is the name of the Herculaneum Baths, so called by the Romans who discovered the thermal springs and were taken over by Emperor Franz-Josef I – Herkulesbad.
