STORYLINE:
More than 2,000 protesters rallied in front of the national parliament on Monday to protest against President Mikhail Saakashvili's pro-Western course and pushed for his resignation.
The rally was organised by the opposition Justice party and a loose coalition of parties called the Anti-Soros movement.
This movement has staged regular anti-government protests riding a wave of public discontent with persistent poverty and the slow pace of economic growth.
Anti-Soros activists accuse the foundation of US billionaire philanthropist George Soros of funding the 2003 Rose Revolution that brought Saakashvili to power.
"We don't want to be an American colony", said Temur Zhorzholiani, the leader of the Conservative
Monarchist Party, speaking on the sidelines of the rally.
Saakashvili has sought to reduce Russian influence and move his Caucasus Mountain nation toward closer integration with the United States and the West.
He frequently rails against Moscow, accusing it of interfering with Georgian internal affairs.
Participants in the protest called for Saakashvili's resignation and early presidential and parliamentary elections.
