During his 30-minutes long talk, Chaminda highlighted the following main ideas.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is the fourth major industrial era since the initial Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. It can be described as a range of new technologies that are focusing on the physical, digital, and biological worlds and impacting all disciplines, economies and industries as a whole. Since the technologies are changing in a speed, scale and complexity in a way the mankind has never experienced before, nobody is still capable of predicting the developments and how the future looks like. However, there are some global collaborative initiatives such as by World Economic Forum and pioneering country examples such as USA, Germany and Japan who are trying to shape the Industry 4.0 to get the maximum benefits of it. The Industry 4.0 brings lot of benefits to emerging economies such as Sri Lanka while exposing us to many risks and challenges. It is therefore necessary that all stakeholders including the government, businesses, and public should be educated and get ready to face such developments. Then the objective of this presentation is to discuss on how Sri Lankan businesses should be ready proactively to get the maximum benefits from Industry 4.0 while minimizing possible negative impact of the same.
