Her eleven-year-old daughter was raped by two policemen, then sold in China's sex trade.
Tang Hui's daughter spent three months as a child prostitute in Hunan province before she was rescued in December 2006. And after a grueling six-year-long court case, mother and daughter should have been able to move on. But instead, the mother, Tang Hui, was sentenced to one and half years in a Chinese labor camp.
The lengthy trial came to a close in June 2012. Two of the seven defendants were sentenced to death, four were given life sentences, and one received a 15-year prison term. The trial caused a public outcry in China where stories of rape by officials and kidnapping are not uncommon.
That could be why two months after the trial, on August 2, Tang was told she was being sentenced to 18 months of hard labor for, quote, "seriously disturbing social order and exerting a negative impact on society."
[Tang Xingling, Lawyer]:
"There are many cases of injustice like hers in Chinese courts. But the government doesn't truly compensate those people according to the law. There are many cases like that. People have suffered from torture and unjust imprisonment."
Tang's imprisonment was met with another public outcry and she was released eight days into her sentence. Now, with the backing of Chinese netizens, she's seeking compensation for her time in jail.
But on Friday, the city's re-education through labor committee rejected Tang's appeal for compensation.
Tang continues to petition.
