The roots of the American experience are irrevocably tied to race. In her talk, Etoke reminds us that the racial tensions that define our present are only the most recent manifestation of a centuries long struggle to affirm black humanity. A history that must be known in order to grasp America's current collective struggle.
Nathalie Etoke is an Associate Professor of French and Africana Studies, Connecticut College. She is the author of two books and several articles published in academic journals. In 2012, her book Melancholia Africana received the Frantz Fanon Book Award from the Caribbean Association of Philosophy. In 2011, she made a documentary entitled Afro Diasporic French Identities. The documentary examines how the legacy of slavery and colonization challenges the republican ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity.
