Today on the Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at the The 1980 Pontiac Firebird by Testors. This is a model car unboxing video we hope you will enjoy and share.
"1980 saw the legendary Firebird as the Indy 500 pace car. This was the famous turbo, the first Pontiac turbo-charged V-8. this was appropriate as many of the Indy cars were runningturbochargers also, although the boost was set a good deal higher in the race cars! This handsome silver convertible had almost no changes made from the stock turbo for sale in dealer show rooms with the exception of slightly heavier duty shock absorbers and special high-speed tires plus the special lights and radios required of all pace cars.
The MPC 1980 Pontiac Turbo Firebird Indy Pace Car model kit is a "Skill Level 2" glue and paint model kit with many parts. you have the option of building this model kit as the factory stock pace car, or a car with some custom goodies.
The build process starts with the wheels and tires. This consists of a sandwich of your choice of stock Firebird wheels or custom 5-spoke wheels that are placed into the BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires and connect with wheel backing plates. A plastic pin holds the front wheels to the axle block while the rear wheels are held on with the traditional full length metal axle.
The engine is assembled from multiple parts which includes right and left engine/manual transmission parts, cylinder heads, valve covers, front timing chain cover, oil pan, oil filler cap, fan belt with pulleys, alternator, starter, fan, turbo intake manifold, 5-piece chrome turbo charger system, distributor, carburetor pre-heater tube, air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, manifold crossover pipe, turbo boost pipe, exhaust outlet, and an upper radiator hose. There is also an option for two 3-piece lake pipes.
The completed engine mounts to a pan style chassis that includes lower A-Arms, a drive shaft loop, rear differential/leaf springs/exhaust pipe unit, drive shaft and chrome exhaust tips. A fan shroud and battery glue to the one piece radiator wall and radiator which then glued to the front of the chassis.
The MPC 1980 Pontiac Firebird model kit is made of white plastic, clear plastic, transparent red plastic, and chrome plated plastic. The tires are BF Goodrich Radial T/A's which are accurate to the real Firebird and look good.
The interior is a simple bucket construction with dashboard, steering column and steering wheel, your choice of stock or custom shift lever, and bucket seats. The dashboard looks like the correct 1980 Firebird piece.
The body is beautiful and has separate hood, front end with four clear square headlights and turn signals, rear panel with red tail lights, rear spoiler, rear bumpers, side sport mirrors, wheel flares, and a choice to cut out the T-Tops. A lot of these parts "plug" into holes or slots to hold the body panels on and the interior and chassis to the body. Unfortunately, there are some parts fit issues and gaps in my example.
Clear parts include headlights, a front windshield and rear glass.
MPC included a really cool set of decals with this model kit. The colors are accurate to the real car and the execution of decal design is excellent.
If you like these simple snap-together vintage sports cars, then 1980 Pontiac Turbo Firebird Indy Pace Car model car kit is perfect for you!
