My program is called Songs in Time. My goal is to teach children about the cultural heritage of songs, and the historical context from which they originate. Dr. Brewster M Higley wrote a poem called “My Western Home” in 1872. A friend of his, Daniel E. Kelley wrote the melody on his guitar. The song has gone through numerous changes and was popular with ranchers, cowboys, and western settlers. The song as we know it today was adopted as the official song of the state of Kansas in 1917. It has been recorded by numerous artists such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Willie Nelson.
