Homemade Chocolate Syrup
I've been making chocolate syrup at home for years because it's so easy and cheaper than buying bottles of it from the store. Plus, there are no preservatives in it, just cocoa powder, sugar, water, salt, and vanilla extract.
I use this to make chocolate milk for my kids, as a topping for ice cream and other desserts, and it also works for making hot chocolate. So much easier than mixing that powder into milk!
Sirop (syrup) is very popular in France as a mix-in for drinks. The French enjoy flavors such as mint, grenadine, peach, almond, and more, but I haven't seen any chocolate syrup (I haven't searched very hard). This is such an easy thing to make at home. Hope you'll try making some for yourself!
Recipe:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup cocoa powder (50 grams)
1 1/4 cups water (300 grams)
1 1/2 cups sugar (300 grams)
pinch of salt
2 teaspoons vanilla (8 grams)
Directions:
In a pot, bring water, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to a boil. Use a larger pot so that as the mixture bubbles up, it won't spill over. Let it boil for a couple minutes, then remove from heat and add the vanilla extract. Pour the syrup into a glass bottle or jars, and let cool. Once it is cool, it can be stored in the fridge. Ours usually lasts a few weeks in the fridge.
Enjoy!
