This minatur piece Ostrakon (2017) for clarinet, accordion and string quartet is an arrangement from the first part of Holz' "Schakalkopf" (2016) for flute, clarinet and strings.
"An ostracon is a piece of ceramics, usually broken off from a vase or another earthenware. In an archaeological context, ostraca refer to shards or even small pieces of stone, in which letters were scratched.
This self-contained part consists of a continuum of chained harmonic sequences. The harmonic progression proceeds in a sense of a chorale, whose flowing and sensuous vocal movement forms "fluctuated" sound qualities in the form of a tremolo.
The severity of ancient Egyptian art inspired my work and contributed much to the character of this part: the temperament has something very direct and wild, expressive but also dark. Through clear phrases, in a way almost "sharp-edged", the music sounds archaic and mystical. The tireless tremolo of the strings somehow bewitched..." (Eres Holz)
